Headshot of Sue, The Practical Passport Founder

Hiya I’m Sue, founder of The Practical Passport.

I started this blog to help others to plan their own adventures, offer practical tips and advice and share a realistic view of what travelling is really like.

This travel blog is different from a lot of other blogs out there because I am not a full time traveller and I don’t get paid to travel, instead I work a full time job and travel when I can. So just like you, I go through the same struggles of saving up, the excitement of deciding where to go, and the stress of having to organise everything myself.

I have visited 35 countries across 6 continents and my trips have ranged from short European city breaks to working holiday gap years. My main travel companion is my husband Jon and we are all about the budget travel (with the occasional all-inclusive thrown in). We love to explore each destination we visit, immerse ourselves in the culture and try new things.

When I planned my first big trip in 2008 (before the era of smartphones and Instagram), I was so nervous and unsure what I was doing. I had only been on a plane once before and had never travelled abroad without my parents. I wanted to make sure everything went smoothly but I found it difficult to get practical advice about all the little things such as what life would be like on the road, how much should I pack, will I make friends easily and what is the best method for paying for things.

Most of my friends and family had just been abroad on all-inclusive holidays, but even the few that had been travelling, when I asked if they could offer me advice just said general things like ‘it was fun’ or ‘go to the Sydney Opera house’. But as a hyper-organised and stressy person I wanted more specific and tangible information about what things I needed to organise before I left, and what to expect when I was actually travelling.

This bring me back to the reason I started this blog. I thought that if I wanted answers to all these travel questions, then maybe there were lots of other first time travellers who also had the same worries, concerns and questions I did, and so The Practical Passport was born.

Who is this blog for?

This blog aims to help you organise your trip right from the saving and planning stage, to packing and getting to the airport, navigating your way around a new country and what to expect, right up until you return home. It is perfect for novice travellers setting out on their first adventure. It is written from a British perspective, with lots of information and tips relevant to people living in the UK, however many of the articles and tips are useful no matter where you live in the world.

Travel is a wonderful experience, it’s what I spend all my free time and money on, with my life’s ambition being to visit every country in the world. But it can also be hard, challenging and lonely and I try to not sugar coat or glamourise travelling, and instead try to give an honest account of life on the road, what to expect, and the ups and downs you may encounter.

Thank you for visiting my blog, it means the world to me, and I hope I can help you plan your next big adventure

Happy travels to you all xx
